Stop Blaming Genetics (No Excuses)
I suppose I'll take a lot of heat for this one, but if you're struggling with your weight or fitness level, stop blaming your parents (genetics). I'm sure many will disagree with me, but hear me out.
While there is evidence that suggests some people are more likely to be heavy or thin or whatever, there's no reason to sit back and just let it happen. This author comes from a family (parent and brothers) that are all obese and are struggling with related complications (diabetes, hypertension, etc.). Yet, with proper diet and exercise, this author has managed to avoid those pitfalls and has even become a bodybuilding champion.
Some will state that they have tried "everything"; perhaps they truly believe they have. Yet, it is more likely that they have not really tried "everything". Many of these individuals have a bookshelf filled with the latest fad diet and exercise videos and books. On the other hand, some have achieved amazing results and have overcome the "genetic" challenge to get into outstanding shape. So what is the difference between these two extremes? Dedication and commitment to a goal is the answer. If you really want to reach any goal (fitness or other), you must be willing to do whatever it takes to get there. That is simply the difference.
The one exception is someone who is struggling with any medical condition that might alter their metabolism (like a thyroid problem). However, there is medication and to treat this and should be sought out through the advice and care of a physician.
What else might be missing is information. Many individuals really do want to improve their health and fitness but just have no idea of where to start and what to do. That's where a personal trainer comes in. Think about it. How many exercise videos, machines and diets have you (or someone you know) tried over the years with no results? How could this be? Millions of dollars are spent every year by people trying to get into shape. They will spend all of this money, yet won't just hire a personal trainer who can get them the results they want, and without all those diets, pills and worthless DVDs they saw on an infomercial.
If you needed some pipes fixed in your house, you would likely hire a plumber (unless you are one). You wouldn't try to save money and do it yourself, because you know it would cost you more in the long run. Especially if you have to buy tools and compensate for you errors along the way. Fitness is no different. A personal trainer with a solid background (experience and a "real" certification) can put together a customized program for you and get you to your goals faster.
So take charge of your own health and take a step in the right direction. Forget excuses like genetics or lack of time. Get yourself a great trainer and move forward! You'll be glad you did.
